In 1916, noted architectural sculptor Adolph Weinman submitted to the U.S. Mint the winning design for what would become one of the most iconic coins of the 20th century. His design portrayed Liberty wearing a winged pileus. In the midst of World War I, Weinman chose the image for its inherent symbolism.
